Local Information
The Falls: 40 kilometers north-west of Älvsbyn these are the largest free-flowing rapids in Norden, with a drop of over 82 meters through a series of rapids stretching for more than five kilometers
Plant and Animal Life: The flora in the reserve is highly varied, with everything from the heath land pine forests, with lingon-berries and heather to verdant waterside meadows and birch forest. Here the flora includes downy currant, cinnamomea and various ferns. In the dried-up river course, of the "Dead Falls", you can find small-fruited yellow sedge, bladder sedge, alpine saw-wort and Alpine meadow-rue. The flora at Storforsen also contains several alpine plants that are not usually found so close to the coast, the seeds having followed the river down from the mountainous regions, thus spreading the plants down to Storforsen. In and around the old river course, there is a lush riverside forest that is home to stone bramble, herb-paris, oak fern and valerian. A little higher up one can find tormentil, northern marsh violet and lily-of-the-valley.
Storforsen Nature Reserve: Is not just an impressive landscape of outstanding natural value. The reserve also features a Museum of Forestry and Log-floating, which depicts life among forestry workers and log-floaters in past centuries. The area is easily accessible - even to wheelchair-bound visitors Guided tours leave daily from the information centre during the period 15 June to 10 August
Museum of Forestry and Log-floating: The Museum of Forestry and Log-floating depicts the development of forestry up until the mechanisation in the 1950s, and significance of the river as a means of transporting free-floating timber
The History of Storforsen: Since the Stone Age, the Storforsen area has been significant to people. The environment is rich in prehistoric remains with many different types of relics, from the hunter-trapper people of the Stone Age, via reindeer herding culture to the forestry culture. There are large numbers of dwelling sites with Stone Age characteristics, semi-subterranean houses, dwelling site pits, cooking pits, hunting pits, hearths, charcoal pits, tar piles, hut sites, foresters' and log-floaters' huts and excavated canals with water-smoothed rocks
Prehistoric remains: There are large quantities of prehistoric remains in the present-day Pite river valley show that the area has been frequented for a very long time by different hunter-trapper people
